HISTORY OF NATIONAL ZOO AND AQUARIUM MONTH
National Zoo and Aquarium Month has a rich history that dates back to the establishment of the first zoo in America. The Philadelphia Zoo, opened in 1874, paved the way for the conservation and breeding of endangered animals.
In 1895, the New York Zoological Society was founded, and over time, it took over the management of popular zoos such as Prospect Park, Central Park, and Queens Zoo. In the 1930s, federal relief programs provided financial aid for zoo renovations and expansions during the challenging times of the Great Depression.
By the 1960s, zoos began operating through public-private partnerships, recognizing the importance of conservation and education. The public perception of zoos shifted from mere entertainment to centers for learning and wildlife preservation.
Finally, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan officially designated the month of June as National Zoo and Aquarium Month. This annual celebration highlights the vital role of zoos and aquariums in the conservation and protection of animals and marine life.
